FAQs
Which medications should I stop before a PET scan?
Generally you should hold insulin, sulfonylureas, syrup‑based diabetic oral agents, and any drug that contains caffeine (including some OTC pain relievers). Most blood‑pressure meds, antidepressants, and routine OTC analgesics can be continued unless your doctor advises otherwise.
How do I manage my insulin on the day of the PET scan?
Most centers ask you to skip the insulin dose 4–6 hours before the appointment and to monitor glucose closely. Bring a glucose log and discuss any adjustments with the imaging team so they can interpret the scan correctly.
Can I have coffee or tea on the morning of my PET scan?
No. Caffeine can increase FDG uptake in muscles and the brain, creating false‑positive spots. Avoid all caffeine‑containing drinks and supplements for at least 24 hours prior to the scan.
Do over‑the‑counter pain relievers affect PET scan results?
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen have only minimal impact on FDG distribution and are usually safe to continue. However, avoid high‑dose NSAIDs or any analgesic that contains caffeine unless directed otherwise.
What foods and drinks should I avoid the day before the PET scan?
Stay away from sugary foods, high‑fat meals, alcohol, sodas, and any sweetened juices. Stick to a light dinner of lean protein and vegetables, stay well‑hydrated with plain water, and fast (no solid food) for about 4 hours before the scan.
